HISTORY OF GREECE IN A NUTSHELLBy Matina K. Psyhogeos
It is with great pleasure that I'm introducing Matina Psyhogeos' just published, first of its kind book, “ History of Greece in a Nutshell” . More than 5,000 years of a glorious, and most times turbulent history, are neatly contained in this small book. The events - starting from the mythical times up to today's inauguration of the new president of the Hellenic Republic- are presented simply, concisely, accurately, BRIEFLY and in chronological order. In addition, all the great personalities of antiquity are included, thus, compiling a complete encyclopedic volume. The uniqueness of this book stands out by being the first of its genre to include the most important historical events from ancient times to contemporary Greece, their chronology, and the people who left us a legacy - all in one book . It is undoubtedly the FIRST book of its kind in either language, Greek or English. Matina Psyhogeos ( www.psyhogeos.com ), the well-known educator/author, researched widely for this special project and the results are phenomenal . I feel privileged for having played a part in this. As the Director of Greek Education and Culture of the Western United States for more than 25 years, I had asked many educators, historians and scholars, to attempt such a challenging work –for the sake of Hellenism, philhellenes and for helping Greek students of the Diaspora , to learn their ROOTS – but NO LUCK !. Finally, I had to turn to Matina, who – after much pleading and persuasion - promised to undertake such monumental task. When the first book of the: History of Greece in a Nutshell – Personalities that illuminated mankind throughout the ages – reached me two weeks ago, I was speechless. I could hardly believe that a colleague and dear friend of mine was capable of creating such a masterpiece of an abridged version of the history of Greece in ONLY 104 pages – in a nutshell indeed! But, she did it!!! What a perfect contribution to our unsurpassed Hellenic Heritage, and the Department of Hellenic Education of Diaspora! What a blessing indeed! This book makes perfectly clear all the incredible contributions of our ancestors to western civilization by giving emphasis to “THE GLORY THAT WAS GREECE”, while it lets the reader discover “THE GLORY THAT IS GREECE TODAY”. After all, that's what the History of Greece in a Nutshell , is all about” Helen Dumas |
