Dr. Merianos received his B.S. in Pharmacy (Valedictorian, Magna Cum Laude ) from the New England College of Pharmacy (Northeastern University, Boston) in 1961 and his M.S. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Ph. D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1963 and 1966 respectively.

Dr. Merianos started his professional career in 1966 at FMC Corp . working on Antimalarial research in Synthesis of Febrifugine analogs. He joined Millmaster Onyx in 1968 as a Research Chemist in charge of the Antimicrobial Research Program as a Group Leader of Antimicrobial Research. During this 19[1968-86] productive years with ONYX he authored 57 patents in Antimicrobial QAC. Here are some of the products he is associated with: Onyxide 126, Onyxide 200, Onyxide 450, Onyxide 500, BTC 812, BTC 2125M, BTC 1010, Onamer M(Polyquaternium -1), Onyxsperse 12S etc.

The POLYQUAD (Polyquaternium 1) an ophthalmic preservative system FDA approved for use in contact lens disinfecting and cleaning solutions is one of his inventions. The POLYQUAD is the registered Trade name of ALCON LABORATORIES the following are commercial OTC products OPTI-FREE, OPTI-SOFT II, TEARS - NATURALE II etc. Polyquad is replacing Benzalkonium Chloride in many products.

In 1987 he joined GAF Chem. Corp . as a Senior Research Scientist, Industrial Biocides and Advanced Special Projects. In 1991 he was promoted to Research Fellow ISP R&D and 1992 to Associate Director of R&D at ISP-Sutton Laboratories. He wrote a review chapter on "Quaternary Ammonium Antimicrobial Compounds" in the prestigious reference " Disinfection, Sterilization, and Preservation" , by S.S. Block 4th Edition Lea & Febiger 1991 and 5 th Edition Lippincott Williams &Wilkins 2001.

In 1995 Dr. Merianos was promoted to Senior Research Fellow at ISP R&D and Director of R&D Sutton Laboratories. He is inventor or co-inventor of more than 107 patents in QAC Antimicrobial compounds, Industrial Biocides and Cosmetic Preservatives. The most recent patents are on " Synergistic Water Soluble Preservative Compositions of Biocidal Mixtures" marketed by ISP/ Sutton Labs under the trade name of GERMALL PLUS & Liquid GERMALL PLUS.

In 1997 Dr. Merianos received THE MICROBIOLOGIST OF THE YEAR AWARD from NJ local Section of the Society of Industrial Microbiology in Recognition of Achievements in Applied Microbiology.

In November 2007 he was honored by the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy for his
Lifetime Achievements in R&D
