Mitrakos earned his undergraduate degree in economics and political science at Pitt in 1968. He also earned a degree in secondary education at Rio Salado College in 2003.

At Pitt, Mitrakos lettered in football in 1965, 1966, and 1967. He was selected for National Champion Notre Dame's All-Opponent Team in 1966, and he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1968. He also is a Penn Hills Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

He is the president and owner of Mitrakos Homes, Inc., a custom builder of Georgian and Bucks County colonials and small commercial projects. Mitrakos also is the president and owner of The Orthodox Calendar Company, which annually creates, writes, and publishes The Daily Lives, Miracles and Wisdom of the Saints Calendar. He has been an investment banker with Mellon Bank, a stockbroker at Dean Witter & Company, and a football coach at Whitworth College.

Mitrakos' community service activities include the design, building, and funding of the first Greek Orthodox monastery in America for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He is a past president of the Pitt Varsity Letter Club, and he helped craft the design of the award given to Awardees of Distinction; this unique Panther has since been duplicated in statue form outside of both Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center. Mitrakos also helped to initiate the Pitt Varsity Letter Club's alumni directory and served as the group's representative to the Pitt Alumni Association Board of Directors. Mitrakos has served on the board of directors for the Fox Chapel Hockey Club and is a past director of the Fox Chapel Lacrosse Club. He also has been a Cub and Boy Scout leader.

Tom and his wife, Georgia, reside in Pittsburgh. They have three sons: Nicholas, Michael, and Gabriel. All three boys are student-athletes in the Fox Chapel School District.
